Michael K. Kivinen, MA, LLP, CHt has a Master’s degree in counseling from Western Michigan University and a Michigan limited license as a psychologist. At West Brook Recovery Center he provides group, family, and individual therapy and facilitates a weekly stress management and relaxation training group. He is a certified hypnotherapist who views hypnosis as a powerful, complementary way to help clients obtain access to their inner resources for creativity, growth, and healing. His previous professional experience includes vocational counseling and thirteen years as a social worker in the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) of adults with serious and persistent mental illnesses. Since 1998 he has worked primarily in addiction treatment. He is an adjunct instructor at both Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) and Aquinas College. He has received continuing education in transpersonal psychology and therapy and in various co-occurring concerns and disorders that complicate addiction recovery, including grief, anxiety, and post traumatic stress (PTSD). In 2016 he obtained trauma model therapy certification through the Ross Institute for Psychological Trauma.
